CLEAR ANSWERS TO YOUR questions
Will my insurance premiums go up if I file a storm damage claim?
Filing a single claim for storm damage should not cause your individual rates to spike. Because storm damage is caused by weather, insurance companies classify it as an “Act of God” or a no-fault event. Your rates don’t increase because you filed a claim; rather, insurance companies evaluate risk by geographic region. If an entire area or zip code is hit hard by a major storm, premiums across that entire region may adjust collectively, regardless of who filed a claim.
As the homeowner, you have the absolute legal right to choose any licensed, reputable contractor you trust to restore your property. You do not need to shop around for the lowest bid because your insurance carrier determines the baseline scope and pricing for the covered damage. Legacy works directly with your insurance company to align on the project scope and utilize standard pricing platforms, ensuring all necessary repairs are covered without you having to manage the back-and-forth.
These terms dictate how you will be reimbursed:
ACV (Actual Cash Value): This is the value of your damaged property at the time of the loss, which factors in depreciation for the age and wear of your roof.
RCV (Replacement Cost Value): This is the actual cost required to replace your roof at today’s market prices.
If you have an RCV policy, your insurance company will typically issue a first check based on the ACV to get the project started. Once the work is fully completed, we will submit the final invoice to release the remaining funds, known as “recoverable depreciation”.
No. It is illegal for any contractor to waive, absorb, or find a workaround to cover your insurance deductible.
The deductible is a mandatory, contractually obligated out-of-pocket responsibility established between you and your insurance provider. Any contractor offering to “save your deductible” or build it into the estimate is engaging in insurance fraud. To protect homeowners, insurance carriers frequently require proof of payment before releasing the final RCV payout. If out-of-pocket costs are a concern, Legacy offers flexible financing solutions to help break the deductible down into manageable monthly payments.
An insurance adjuster’s initial estimate may differ from a contractor’s assessment because additional damage, required materials, or code-related work may become apparent during a more detailed inspection or after work begins.
Ask your insurer to explain anything you do not understand. Legacy can provide photographs, measurements, an itemized scope of work, and other construction documentation for your review and submission to the insurer. If you disagree with a coverage decision or settlement, you should communicate directly with your insurance company and review the dispute or appraisal options described in your policy.
